Challenges and Highlights in 2024 Mining Sector Fundraising

In a challenging year for the mining sector, funds raised by junior and intermediate mining companies fell by 12% in 2024, marking their lowest level in five years, according to S&P Global data. The total amounted to $10.27 billion despite a 2% rise in the number of financings, totaling 2,802 for the year.

According to additional insights from the IndexBox platform, the value of monthly fundraising is reflecting a declining trend after a two-year high was set in October 2024. December saw a significant 21% dip to $890 million, following a nearly 30% drop in November. The number of significant deals, those valued at over $2 million, also declined, with only 66 transactions registered in December.

Gold finance was particularly affected, seeing a 28% decrease to $375 million in December. Although the number of transactions rose to 144 from 137 in November, the reduction in high-value deals from 36 to 29 pulled down the overall totals. The highlight for the year, however, was Spartan Resources' A$220 million allocation for its Dalgaranga gold project, making it the largest financing of 2024.

Elsewhere, funding for base and non-gold precious metals continued to dwindle, dropping 45% to $234 million in December, attributed to declines in copper, nickel, and silver financing. Interestingly, while the number of transactions hit a record high of 114, from 78 in November, fewer large financings were reported, with Osisko Metals' C$72 million deal standing as the only substantial transaction aside from Spartan Resources.

In contrast, funding for specialty commodities experienced a boom, rising by 63% to $281 million in December, the highest in eight months. The continued rise in lithium financings to $145 million and the surge in funds for uranium and graphite further contributed to this upward trend. Vulcan Energy Resources secured the second-largest deal of the year, acquiring A$154 million for the first phase of its Lionheart lithium project in Germany.
