Charlotte Secures Approval for $400 Million Municipal Bond as Population Soars

North Carolina's largest city, Charlotte, is preparing to issue $400 million in municipal bonds, a move prompted by significant population growth that heightens the demand for improved infrastructure. According to Bloomberg, the city gained approval from the state Treasury's Local Government Commission to proceed with the sale, aimed at funding transportation developments and affordable housing initiatives.

The rapid expansion in the region, known as the Queen City, reflects a broader trend of migration to the South, driven by the appeal of affordable housing and milder climates. Between 2022 and 2023 alone, Charlotte's population increased by approximately 15,600 people, according to U.S. Census Bureau data, pushing its total population over 900,000. This positions Charlotte as one of the nation's largest and fastest-growing cities.

The upcoming bond issuance, supported by a voter-approved 0.25-cent property tax hike per $100 of assessed value, highlights the city's commitment to addressing its burgeoning infrastructural needs. The Local Government Commission, under Treasurer Bradford Briner's leadership, has also greenlit additional projects, including $142 million for Wake County's infrastructure improvements and $44 million for projects in Chapel Hill.
