Chery's Global Sales Surge: A Strong Performance in 2024

Chinese automaker Chery has reported a significant rise in its global car sales for 2024, achieving a 38.4% increase to reach 2.6 million vehicles. The state-owned, Wuhu-based company, which continues to be China's leading car exporter, also noted an impressive revenue increase of over 45%, amounting to 480 billion yuan ($65.52 billion).

This surge in sales solidifies Chery's position in the global automotive industry, likely boosting its ranking among global automakers. Their expansion strategy includes introducing Omoda and Jaecoo brand vehicles in Europe and launching production in Spain through a joint venture this year.

Looking ahead, Chery is upbeat about surpassing 3 million vehicle sales in the current year. In comparison, rival automaker Geely sold 3 million vehicles as of November and aims for 5 million units by 2027. Additionally, BYD targets exceeding 4 million car sales in 2024, potentially outpacing industry giants like Ford and Honda.

China's Automotive Market Dynamics

According to IndexBox, China's passenger car export market reached a value of $77.7 billion in 2023, demonstrating its robust position in the global automotive trade. The top exports extended to several countries, leading with $11.7 billion to Russia, followed by $5.9 billion to Belgium and $5.7 billion to the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, China's import value for passenger cars was $45.9 billion in 2023, with Germany being the largest exporter to China, accounting for $15.4 billion. The United States ($8.4 billion), Japan ($7.9 billion), and Slovakia ($5.7 billion) were also significant contributors to the import market.
