Chevron Secures Decade-Long Agreement to Supply Alcoa with 130 Petajoules of Gas

Chevron's Australian unit has entered into a significant agreement to supply a total of 130 petajoules of gas to aluminum producer Alcoa over a 10-year period starting in 2028. According to Reuters, this substantial supply will be sourced from Chevron's Gorgon and Wheatstone facilities, and the North West Shelf Venture, all located in Western Australia.

Alcoa will utilize the gas to power its alumina refineries in the region. Notably, Alcoa had already secured gas agreements with Chevron, Warrego Energy, and Exxon Mobil in 2020 for its Kwinana, Pinjarra, and Wagerup refineries, planned to commence in 2024. However, due to challenging market conditions and the aging infrastructure, Alcoa announced earlier this year that production at the Kwinana refinery would cease.

Recently, a gas disruption at Alcoa's Pinjarra Alumina Refinery caused an unexpected power outage, affecting production. Alcoa is currently working to restore operations while investigating the incident's root cause.
