Chilean Economy Sees Consecutive Growth Despite Inflation Concerns

Chile's economic activity increased for the second consecutive month in November, driven by gains in industry and commerce. According to Bloomberg, the Imacec index, a proxy for gross domestic product, rose 0.3% from October, surpassing the 0.2% median estimate predicted by analysts. From the previous year, activity saw a rise of 2.1%, as reported by the central bank on Thursday.

The nation is currently experiencing above-target inflation and fluctuating economic activity, with central bank policymakers, led by Rosanna Costa, navigating these challenges. Despite strong prospects for exports and wages rising above inflation rates, private consumption and bank lending have been tepid. The central bank recently indicated a potential pause in its interest rate easing cycle due to consumer price threats, including a weakened peso.

Industry saw a notable increase of 2.2% in November, breaking a three-month decline, while commerce grew by 1.1%. However, mining experienced a 0.4% decrease. According to the IndexBox platform, Chile's GDP is projected to expand by 2.3% in 2024 and fall within 1.5% to 2.5% growth for 2025, based on central bank forecasts shared in mid-December. Despite a reduction in forecasts for both investment and domestic demand this year, the impact of geopolitical tensions and changes in global trade creates an environment of uncertainty.

Interest rates have been reduced by a total of 6.25 percentage points since mid-2023, reaching a current level of 5%. Annual inflation decreased to 4.2% in November, with policymakers aiming for a 3% target by early 2026. While unemployment dropped to 8.2% for the three months through November, below all Bloomberg analyst estimates, job creation remains a concern according to economic experts.

Felipe Hernandez, a Latin America economist with Bloomberg, commented on the findings, noting, "November data show uneven and volatile Chile activity despite a monthly advance — signaling a rise in fourth-quarter GDP, but growth below potential and central bank forecasts. With weak labor-market conditions and tight monetary policy, we expect the central bank to continue cutting interest rates. Persistently high inflation may delay the next move, though."
