China Boosts Consumer Subsidies and Industrial Investments to Spur Economic Growth

In a strategic move to invigorate domestic consumption amid challenging export scenarios, China has announced new subsidies for consumer electronics and increased funding for industrial upgrades. According to an official notice, Chinese consumers can avail a 15% subsidy on mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches priced under 6,000 yuan ($818). However, the benefit is capped at 1,500 yuan per person annually.

Additionally, the government will extend its support to a wider range of home and agricultural appliances, increasing the categories eligible for subsidies from eight last year to twelve. This move aligns with China's efforts to prioritize consumption as a key driver of economic growth, countering the deflationary pressures exacerbated by subdued consumer and business confidence.

Bolstering Industrial Equipment Upgrades

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) is leveraging funds from ultra-long sovereign special bonds to offer loan discounts for companies upgrading to new industrial equipment. This is in addition to the existing 1.5% compensation provided by the central government. Vice Chairman Zhao Chenxin emphasized that the program is pivotal in "expanding effective investment, boosting consumer demand, promoting green transformation, and improving people's livelihood."

By subsidizing these products, the government aims to sustain this momentum, stimulating both consumption and production sectors.
