China's Carbon Exports Plummet to $1 Billion in 2023
China Carbon Exports
In 2023, overseas shipments of carbon (carbon blacks and other forms of carbon) decreased by -10.3% to 727K tons for the first time since 2020, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at 879K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, carbon exports contracted markedly to $1B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports, however, saw pronounced growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $1.3B in 2022, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country
Thailand (217K tons), Vietnam (174K tons) and Indonesia (86K tons) were the main destinations of carbon exports from China, together comprising 66% of total exports. Poland, India, Japan, Hungary, Taiwan (Chinese) and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 16%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +127.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for carbon exported from China were Thailand ($270M), Vietnam ($228M) and Indonesia ($113M), with a combined 60% share of total exports. Poland, Japan, Hungary, India, Taiwan (Chinese) and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 19%.
Hungary, with a CAGR of +139.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the carbon price stood at $1,407 per ton (FOB, China), declining by -13.9% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2013 to 2023: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2023 figures, carbon export price increased by +64.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 51% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $1,633 per ton in 2022, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($2,705 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($1,243 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+9.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
