China Cheese And Curd Imports
In February 2023, supplies from abroad of cheese and curd decreased by -4.6% to 13K tons for the first time since October 2022, thus ending a three-month rising trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when imports increased by 53% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of 17K tons. From June 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, cheese and curd imports declined to $71M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. In general, total imports indicated a mild expansion from February 2022 to February 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, imports increased by +31.7% against October 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 52% against the previous month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $87M. From June 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In February 2023, New Zealand (9.2K tons) constituted the largest supplier of cheese and curd to China, with a 73% share of total imports. Moreover, cheese and curd imports from New Zealand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Australia (1.1K tons), ninefold. France (476 tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.8% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from New Zealand totaled +1.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Australia (-4.1% per month) and France (+11.2% per month).
In value terms, New Zealand ($48M) constituted the largest supplier of cheese and curd to China, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($5.1M), with a 7.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 4.7% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from New Zealand totaled +2.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Australia (-3.2% per month) and Italy (+1.4% per month).
Imports by Type
Fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd (4.2K tons), cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (4K tons) and cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed (3.1K tons) were the main products of cheese and curd imports to China, together accounting for 90% of total imports.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered (with a CAGR of +3.5%), while purchases for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the most traded types of cheese and curd in China were cheese of all kinds, grated or powdered ($22M), fresh cheese (unripened or uncured cheese), including whey cheese and curd ($22M) and cheese, other than blue-veined, grated, powdered or processed ($18M), together comprising 88% of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In February 2023, the cheese and curd price stood at $5,647 per ton (CIF, China), remaining constant against the previous month. Over the period from February 2022 to February 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 when the average import price increased by 6.8% month-to-month. The import price peaked at $5,682 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to February 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Denmark ($8,326 per ton), while the price for Australia ($4,767 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
