China Chicken Meat Imports
In March 2023, approximately 129K tons of chicken meat were imported into China; with an increase of 18% against February 2023 figures. The total import volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4% from March 2022 to March 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 with an increase of 19% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in March 2023.
In value terms, chicken meat imports expanded remarkably to $407M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.0% from March 2022 to March 2023; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 when imports increased by 24% m-o-m.

Imports by Country
In March 2023, Brazil (60K tons) constituted the largest supplier of chicken meat to China, with a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, chicken meat imports from Brazil exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (26K tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Thailand (11K tons), with an 8.5% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Brazil stood at +2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (-2.1% per month) and Thailand (+5.7% per month).
In value terms, Brazil ($165M) constituted the largest supplier of chicken meat to China, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($80M), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 13% share.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Brazil stood at +3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: the United States (-1.8% per month) and Thailand (+7.9% per month).
Imports by Type
In March 2023, frozen cuts of chicken (128K tons) was the main type of chicken meat supplied to China, accounting for a 100% share of total imports. It was followed by frozen whole chickens (503 tons), with a 0.4% share of total imports.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of import of frozen cuts of chicken amounted to +1.4%.
In value terms, frozen cuts of chicken ($406M) constituted the largest type of chicken meat supplied to China, comprising 100% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by frozen whole chickens ($747K), with a 0.2% share of total imports.
Import Prices by Country
In March 2023, the chicken meat price stood at $3,155 per ton (CIF, China), with a decrease of -5.3% against the previous month. Over the period from March 2022 to March 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in June 2022 an increase of 13% m-o-m. The import price peaked at $3,833 per ton in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to March 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($4,709 per ton), while the price for Turkey ($2,492 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
