China Dairy Produce Imports
In June 2023, approximately 191K tons of dairy produce were imported into China; picking up by 4.2% compared with the month before. Overall, imports recorded mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in November 2022 when imports increased by 19% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in June 2023.
In value terms, dairy produce imports rose slightly to $620M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. The total import value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% from June 2022 to June 2023; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations in certain months. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in July 2022 when imports increased by 18% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of $649M. From August 2022 to June 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
In June 2023, New Zealand (106K tons) constituted the largest dairy produce supplier to China, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, dairy produce imports from New Zealand exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Germany (27K tons), fourfold. Australia (14K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.2% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from New Zealand stood at +3.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Germany (+0.4% per month) and Australia (-3.6% per month).
In value terms, New Zealand ($377M) constituted the largest supplier of dairy produce to China, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($60M), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 6% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from New Zealand amounted to +2.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Australia (-0.7% per month) and France (+0.4% per month).
Imports by Type
Powdered milk (78K tons), whole fresh milk (46K tons) and cream fresh (27K tons) were the main products of dairy produce imports to China, with a combined 79% share of total imports. These products were followed by cheese, butter and dairy spreads, skim milk, ghee, yoghurt and fermented milk and evaporated and condensed milk, which together accounted for a further 21%.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by cheese (with a CAGR of +4.7%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, powdered milk ($283M) constituted the largest type of dairy produce supplied to China, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by cream fresh ($105M), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by cheese, with a 14% share.
Import Prices by Country
In June 2023, the dairy produce price amounted to $3,246 per ton (CIF, China), reducing by -1.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 10% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $3,641 per ton in March 2023; however, from April 2023 to June 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was Australia ($4,376 per ton), while the price for Poland ($1,053 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
