China Evergrande Faces Liquidation of Key Offshore Unit in Major Hong Kong Court Setback

China Evergrande Group, the world's most indebted property developer, has been dealt a significant blow as a Hong Kong court ordered the liquidation of one of its crucial offshore units. Source reports that this is the latest legal victory for the developer's liquidators amid ongoing efforts to recover funds.

The petition, filed against Evergrande's subsidiary CEG Holdings BVI, aims to salvage funds from the property giant, which defaulted in 2021, triggering a crisis in China's real estate market. With liabilities exceeding $300 billion, the company was under immense pressure and failed to propose a viable restructuring plan for its $23 billion offshore debt, leading to the liquidation order by the Hong Kong High Court in January 2024.

The liquidators, Edward Middleton and Tiffany Wong of Alvarez & Marsal Asia, are vigorously working to recuperate creditors' losses, targeting a recovery of $6 billion in remuneration and dividends previously disbursed to individuals, including Evergrande's founder. Legal actions have been instigated against Evergrande's auditor, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, and court proceedings have been initiated against CBRE Group, a commercial real estate services firm, as reported by the Financial Times.

Trading in Evergrande's shares has been halted since January 29, 2024, and the company has confirmed that the suspension will continue until further notice.
