China Faces Demographic Challenges as Population Declines for Third Consecutive Year

According to recent data from the National Statistics Bureau, the population decreased by over 1.39 million, reaching a total of 1.408 billion people. This occurs as 9.54 million births were recorded in 2024, an increase of 520,000 from the previous year, attributed partly to the perceived auspicious 'year of the dragon' in the Chinese zodiac. Yet, despite this rise, the birth rate remains the second lowest since the People's Republic of China was established in 1949.

China's efforts to counteract declining birth and population growth rates continue to face significant hurdles. Changing social norms, decades of stringent family planning policies, and rising child-rearing costs have contributed to a steady decline in newborn numbers since the 1960s. Although a slight uptick in births was seen in 2016 following the relaxation of the one-child policy, further growth has not been sustained.

Bloomberg Intelligence forecasts that China's population may drop to 1.36 billion by 2035, potentially reverting to levels not seen since 2012. This decline may be mitigated if new incentives for families to grow are successfully implemented. In response, authorities have pledged enhanced support for families with multiple children encompassing assistance with housing, healthcare, and employment.

The demographic trend poses significant economic implications for China, particularly through a contracting labor force and the increasing burden of an ageing population on an already underfunded pension system. In 2024, China announced its first increase in the retirement age since 1978, a measure that has sparked public dissatisfaction.
