China Footwear Exports
After three months of growth, shipments abroad of footwear decreased by -58.7% to 375M pairs in February 2023. In general, exports recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 27% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 908M pairs in January 2023, and then contracted notably in the following month.
In value terms, footwear exports fell dramatically to $2.3B (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in May 2022 when exports increased by 35% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 5.6B pairs in July 2022; however, from August 2022 to February 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
The United States (44M pairs), Japan (27M pairs) and Russia (21M pairs) were the main destinations of footwear exports from China, with a combined 25% share of total exports. The Philippines, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Germany, the UK, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +6.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for footwear exported from China were the United States ($325M), Kyrgyzstan ($199M) and Russia ($173M), with a combined 31% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Kazakhstan, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea, Malaysia, Germany, the UK, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 33%.
In terms of the main countries of destination, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +9.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap (228M pairs), footwear with uppers of textile materials (117M pairs) and leather footwear (25M pairs) were the main products of footwear exports from China, together accounting for 99% of total exports.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the biggest increases were in footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap (with a CAGR of -2.5%), while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.
In value terms, footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap ($1.2B) remains the largest type of footwear exported from China, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by footwear with uppers of textile materials ($606M), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by leather footwear, with an 18% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of footwear of rubber or plastics, not waterproof, not sports, without a metal toe-cap stood at -1.6%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: footwear with uppers of textile materials (-4.2% per month) and leather footwear (-2.7% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In February 2023, the footwear price stood at $6.0 per pair (FOB, China), with an increase of 2.9% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in April 2022 an increase of 8.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $6.6 per pair in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to February 2023, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Kyrgyzstan ($16.2 per pair), while the average price for exports to Japan ($4.0 per pair) was amongst the lowest.
