Fruit Import in China Rises Dramatically to $824M in March 2023

China Fruit Imports

For the third consecutive month, China recorded growth in overseas purchases of fruits, which increased by 42% to 487K tons in March 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.

In value terms, fruit imports skyrocketed to $824M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. Overall, imports continue to indicate a notable increase.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (150K tons), the Philippines (81K tons) and Chile (75K tons) were the main suppliers of fruit imports to China, with a combined 63% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Cambodia, Peru and Ecuador, which together accounted for a further 27%.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +4.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($214M), Chile ($195M) and Vietnam ($154M) were the largest fruit suppliers to China, with a combined 68% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Thailand, with a CAGR of +8.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports by Type

Bananas and plantains (196K tons), non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified (110K tons) and plums and sloes (51K tons) were the main products of fruit imports to China, together accounting for 73% of total imports. These products were followed by grapes, pineapples, peaches and nectarines, oranges, watermelons, mangoes, mangosteens and guavas, grapefruits, avocados, dates, figs, apples, pears and quinces, kiwi fruits, lemons and limes, tangerines, mandarins, clementines, satsumas and papayas, which together accounted for a further 27%.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the biggest increases were in mandarin and clementine (with a CAGR of +11.1%), while purchases for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, non-citrus fruits not elsewhere classified ($306M) constituted the largest type of fruit supplied to China, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by plums and sloes ($139M), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by bananas and plantains, with a 15% share.

Import Prices by Country

In March 2023, the fruit price stood at $1,694 per ton (CIF, China), jumping by 25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, import price indicated a noticeable expansion from March 2022 to March 2023: its price increased at an average monthly rate of +2.6% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on March 2023 figures, fruit import price increased by +24.6% against February 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 an increase of 44% against the previous month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $2,639 per ton in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to March 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($3,700 per ton), while the price for the Philippines ($695 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+3.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
