China Industrial Monocarboxylic Fatty Acids Imports
In February 2023, imports of industrial monocarboxylic fatty acids into China fell to 207K tons, with a decrease of -5.5% on January 2023. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in October 2022 with an increase of 36% month-to-month. As a result, imports reached the peak of 266K tons. From November 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, industrial monocarboxylic fatty acids imports dropped to $180M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, total imports indicated a tangible expansion from February 2022 to February 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +3.5% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on February 2023 figures, imports increased by +7.7% against December 2022 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in October 2022 with an increase of 33% against the previous month. As a result, imports attained the peak of $253M. From November 2022 to February 2023, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In February 2023, Indonesia (190K tons) was the main supplier of industrial monocarboxylic fatty acids to China, accounting for a 92% share of total imports. Moreover, industrial monocarboxylic fatty acids imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (10K tons), more than tenfold.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of volume from Indonesia amounted to +10.2%.
In value terms, Indonesia ($162M) constituted the largest supplier of industrial monocarboxylic fatty acids to China, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($9.2M), with a 5.1% share of total imports.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value from Indonesia amounted to +5.4%.
Import Prices by Country
In February 2023, the industrial monocarboxylic fatty acids price amounted to $871 per ton (CIF, China), dropping by -2.4% against the previous month. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2022 an increase of 12% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $1,598 per ton in May 2022; however, from June 2022 to February 2023, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($894 per ton), while the price for Indonesia stood at $857 per ton.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (-2.9%).
