China, Japan, Malaysia Remain Major Suppliers of Printing Machinery to the U.S.

IndexBox has just published a new report "U.S. Printing Machinery And Equipment Market. Analysis And Forecast to 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

Printing Machinery and Equipment Market Retains Its Stable Values

In 2017, the U.S. printing machinery and equipment market stood at $X in wholesale prices. This figure reflects total revenue of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). According to IndexBox estimates, from 2008 to 2017 the U.S. printing machinery and equipment market showed negative dynamics due to decline of printing industry, falling with a CAGR of -X% per year. The strongest contraction of the market was observed from 2008 to 2014 (with the exception of a small rebound in 2011), stabilising over the next three years.

A modest growth in the market of printing machinery and equipment is forecasted by 2025The consumption of the machinery and equipment market depends on the printing industry, which continues to contract slowly. The decreasing demand for traditional printing along with increasing availability of digital printing are the factors behind the modest growth in demand. At the same time, industrial growth in the U.S. pushes for moderate growth of demand for packaging printing, flexographic and design printing.

U.S. growth in machinery and equipment consumption is expected to grow to +X% (currently -X%) in the medium term, which will lead the market to $X by 2025.

Production of Printing Equipment Contacted after a Moderate Recovery

U.S. printing machinery and equipment manufacturing dropped by X% to $X in 2017. Over the last nine years, production declined by an avearge annual rate of -X% per year. Overall, printing machinery and equipment output contracted by X% from 2007 to 2017.

The Decline in Production Was Recorded for All Product Categories

In 2017, printing presses, all types accounted for X% of U.S printing machinery and equipment manufacturing, followed by binding machinery and equipment (including paper cutting, collating, and gathering machines) (X%). The highest share of printing machinery and equipment manufacturing was held by all other miscellaneous printing trades machinery, including typesetting machinery (excluding justifying typewriters), accounting for X% of total production. From 2007 to 2017, these product categories illustrated negative dynamics: binding machinery and equipment (including paper cutting, collating, and gathering machines) (-X%), printing presses, all types (-X%) and all other miscellaneous printing trades machinery, including typesetting machinery (excluding justifying typewriters) (-X%).

The U.S. Printing Machinery and Equipment Market Remains Being Buoyed by Imports

The U.S. printing machinery and equipment market is completely dependent on imported products: imports significantly exceed the volume of national production, which also may include the export of previously imported products. Most of import supplies originate from Asia: China, Japan and Malaysia constitute the main suppliers.

China, Japan, Malaysia Remain Major Suppliers of Printing Machinery and Equipment to the U.S.

The value of total U.S. printing machinery and equipment imports totalled $X in 2017, decreasing at an average annual rate of -X% from 2007-2017. Throughout the period under review, the market remained almost entirely dependent on imports. It is expected that the dependence on imports will continue in the medium term, mainly due to the imports of parts and consumables to the printing machinery and equipment, which account for X% of the value of imports.

Import expansion, however, is anticipated to increase at a slower pace over the next decade, compared with the previous ten years, due to weak demand for printing machinery undermined by an expansion of digital media.

China ($X), Japan ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constitute the main suppliers of printing machinery and equipment into the U.S., with a combined share of X% of total U.S. imports in 2017. Malaysia (+X% per year) emerged as the fastest growing supplier from 2007 to 2017, while imports from Japan declined by on average -X% per year, and imports from China remained relatively unchanged over the same period. Therefore, Malaysia (+X percentage points) and China (+X percentage points) significantly strengthened their position in terms of the U.S. imports from 2007 to 2017; while the share of Japan reduced by –X percentage points.

Most of Printing Machinery and Equipment Exports are Sent to Canada, Mexico, China and the Netherlands

The U.S. exported $X of printing machinery and equipment in 2017, which was higher than the total U.S. printing machinery and equipment output; this indicates that some re-exports should take place. A steeper decline in exports was recorded from 2015-2017: printing industry is declining worldwide, thereby generating weak demand on the export markets; the appreciation of the dollar, which makes exports more expensive to foreign buyers, is also a factor.

In 2017, the main destinations of U.S. printing machinery and equipment exports were Canada ($X), Mexico ($X), China ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for approx. X% of the total exports. The share exported to Canada (+X percentage points) and China (+X percentage points) increased, while the share sent to Mexico (-X percentage points) and the Netherlands (-X percentage points) illustrated negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analysed period.
