China Leather Footwear Exports
In June 2023, leather footwear exports from China soared to 55M pairs, growing by 19% compared with May 2023 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when exports increased by 51% month-to-month. The exports peaked at 70M pairs in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to June 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, leather footwear exports skyrocketed to $807M (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Overall, exports, however, showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when exports increased by 48% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 1.2B pairs in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to June 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country
The United States (12M pairs), Russia (6.4M pairs) and the Philippines (2.3M pairs) were the main destinations of leather footwear exports from China, with a combined 37% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Singapore, Australia, Spain, the UK, Benin and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 26%.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the biggest increases were in Benin (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for leather footwear exported from China were the United States ($210M), Russia ($112M) and Italy ($32M), together accounting for 44% of total exports. the Netherlands, Germany, Malaysia, the Philippines, Australia, Singapore, Spain, the UK, Benin and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 24%.
Benin, with a CAGR of +14.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Footwear, sole rubber, plastics uppers of leather, nes (41M pairs) was the largest type of leather footwear exported from China, accounting for a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, footwear, sole rubber, plastics uppers of leather, nes exceeded the volume of the second product type, boots, sole rubber or plastic upper leather, nes (11M pairs), fourfold. Footwear, nes, uppers leather (1.8M pairs) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3.4% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of footwear, sole rubber, plastics uppers of leather, nes was relatively modest. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: boots, sole rubber or plastic upper leather, nes (-1.0% per month) and footwear, nes, uppers leather (-0.3% per month).
In value terms, footwear, sole rubber, plastics uppers of leather, nes ($527M) remains the largest type of leather footwear exported from China, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by boots, sole rubber or plastic upper leather, nes ($247M), with a 31% share of total exports. It was followed by footwear, nes, uppers leather, with a 3% share.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of footwear, sole rubber, plastics uppers of leather, nes totaled -1.8%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: boots, sole rubber or plastic upper leather, nes (-1.1% per month) and footwear, nes, uppers leather (+1.4% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In June 2023, the leather footwear price amounted to $14.8 per pair (FOB, China), falling by -2.8% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when the average export price increased by 2.9% against the previous month. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $16,849 per thousand pairs. From August 2022 to June 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In June 2023, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($20.0 per pair), while the average price for exports to Nigeria ($4.6 per pair) was amongst the lowest.
From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+2.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
