China Molluscs Exports
In 2023, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of molluscs (scallops, mussels, cuttle fish, squid and octopus), when their volume decreased by -14.8% to 363K tons. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 31%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 625K tons. From 2017 to 2023, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, molluscs exports shrank markedly to $2.1B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $3.2B in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country
South Korea (56K tons), Japan (50K tons) and the United States (34K tons) were the main destinations of molluscs exports from China, with a combined 39% share of total exports. Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +14.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Korea ($313M), Japan ($285M) and the United States ($239M) appeared to be the largest markets for molluscs exported from China worldwide, together accounting for 41% of total exports. Thailand, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
Among the main countries of destination, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +11.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the molluscs price amounted to $5,666 per ton (FOB, China), which is down by -16.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average export price increased by 24%. The export price peaked at $6,785 per ton in 2022, and then plummeted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong ($9,755 per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($3,800 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+1.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
