China's Nucleic Acids Export Rises 2%, Averaging $418M in April 2023
China Nucleic Acids Exports
Nucleic acids exports from China reduced to 18K tons in April 2023, which is down by -9.7% against March 2023 figures. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% over the period from April 2022 to April 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in May 2022 with an increase of 31% month-to-month.
In value terms, nucleic acids exports stood at $418M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.0% over the period from April 2022 to April 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in May 2022 with an increase of 32% against the previous month.

Exports by Country
India (3.5K tons), the United States (1.9K tons) and Brazil (1.8K tons) were the main destinations of nucleic acids exports from China, with a combined 40% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Italy, Mexico, Germany, South Korea, Indonesia and Australia, which together accounted for a further 38%.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in Australia (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($68M), the United States ($57M) and Brazil ($38M) appeared to be the largest markets for nucleic acids exported from China worldwide, together accounting for 39% of total exports.
Brazil, with a CAGR of +6.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Nucleic acids and their salts, other heterocyclic compounds, n.e.c. in heading number 2934 (8.9K tons), heterocyclic compounds; containing a benzothiazole ring-system (whether or not hydrogenated), not further fused (7.2K tons) and heterocyclic compounds; containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure (1.8K tons) were the main products of nucleic acids exports from China.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in heterocyclic compounds; containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure (with a CAGR of +3.2%), while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, nucleic acids and their salts, other heterocyclic compounds, n.e.c. in heading number 2934 ($338M) remains the largest type of nucleic acids exported from China, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by heterocyclic compounds; containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure ($46M), with an 11% share of total exports.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of nucleic acids and their salts, other heterocyclic compounds, n.e.c. in heading number 2934 totaled +2.3%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: heterocyclic compounds; containing an unfused thiazole ring (whether or not hydrogenated) in the structure (+3.7% per month) and heterocyclic compounds; containing a benzothiazole ring-system (whether or not hydrogenated), not further fused (-2.0% per month).
Export Prices by Country
In April 2023, the nucleic acids price stood at $23,381 per ton (FOB, China), picking up by 13% against the previous month. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in June 2022 when the average export price increased by 24% m-o-m. The export price peaked at $26,526 per ton in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to April 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($42,783 per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($4,195 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
