Nuts Import in China Increases Rapidly to $39M in March 2023

In March 2023, purchases abroad of nuts was finally on the rise to reach 14K tons after two months of decline. In general, imports posted strong growth.

In value terms, nuts imports surged to $39M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. Overall, imports recorded a pronounced expansion.

Imports by Country

In March 2023, the United States (7.8K tons) constituted the largest nuts supplier to China, accounting for a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, nuts imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (1.8K tons), fourfold. Vietnam (1.7K tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States stood at +4.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+1.0% per month) and Vietnam (+102.5% per month).

In value terms, the United States ($28M) constituted the largest supplier of nuts to China, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($2.3M), with a 5.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 5.8% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from the United States amounted to +4.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average monthly rates of imports growth: South Africa (+10.4% per month) and Vietnam (+57.1% per month).

Imports by Type

Almonds (5.4K tons), nuts, nes (5.2K tons) and pistachios (1.4K tons) were the main products of nuts imports to China, with a combined 87% share of total imports. Cashew nuts and hazelnuts lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the major product types, was attained by cashew nut (with a CAGR of +40.8%), while imports for the other products experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, almonds ($17M), nuts, nes ($11M) and pistachios ($8.6M) appeared to be the most imported types of nuts in China, together accounting for 95% of total imports. These products were followed by hazelnuts and cashew nuts, which together accounted for a further 5.1%.

Import Prices by Country

In March 2023, the nuts price amounted to $2,844 per ton (CIF, China), declining by -12.6% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 when the average import price increased by 19% against the previous month. The import price peaked at $4,244 per ton in November 2022; however, from December 2022 to March 2023, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Australia ($7,647 per ton), while the price for Benin ($667 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+10.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
