China's June 2023 Import of Passenger Cars Surges 11% to $3.6B

In June 2023, approximately 61K units of passenger cars were imported into China; growing by 6.6% compared with the previous month's figure. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when imports increased by 25% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 76K units in September 2022; however, from October 2022 to June 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, passenger car imports totaled $3.6B (IndexBox estimates) in June 2023. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when imports increased by 25% against the previous month. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at 4.5B units in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to June 2023, imports remained at a lower figure. Japan (20K units), Germany (18K units) and the United States (9.3K units) were the main suppliers of passenger car imports to China, with a combined 77% share of total imports. Slovakia, the UK, Sweden and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the biggest increases were in Sweden (with a CAGR of +5.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($1.3B), the United States ($747M) and Japan ($630M) appeared to be the largest passenger car suppliers to China, together comprising 72% of total imports. These countries were followed by the UK, Slovakia, Austria and Sweden, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Sweden, with a CAGR of +4.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In June 2023, the passenger car price amounted to $59,810 per unit (CIF, China), increasing by 3.9% against the previous month. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in January 2023 an increase of 20% month-to-month. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $66,798 per unit in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to June 2023, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin: the country with the highest price was Austria ($107K per unit), while the price for Japan ($31,927 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From June 2022 to June 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+2.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
