Plastic Bag Price in China Increases Modestly to $3,975 per Ton

China Plastic Bag Export Price in March 2023

In March 2023, the plastic bag price amounted to $3,975 per ton (FOB, China), growing by 8% against the previous month. In general, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $4,041 per ton in December 2022; afterwards, it flattened through to March 2023.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($7,058 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($2,305 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

China Plastic Bag Export Prices by Type

Prices varied noticeably by the product type; the product with the highest price was plastics ($6,266 per ton), while the average price for exports of sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene totaled $3,099 per ton.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for the following types: plastics; sacks and bags (including cones), for the conveyance or packing of goods, of plastics other than ethylene polymers (+1.0%).

China Plastic Bag Exports

In March 2023, overseas shipments of plastic sacks and bags were finally on the rise to reach 143K tons for the first time since July 2022, thus ending a seven-month declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.0% from March 2022 to March 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months.

In value terms, plastic bag exports soared to $567M (IndexBox estimates) in March 2023. The total export value increased at an average monthly rate of +1.6% over the period from March 2022 to March 2023; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain months. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

China Plastic Bag Exports by Type

Sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene (103K tons) was the largest type of plastic bag exported from China, with a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene exceeded the volume of the second product type, plastics (39K tons), threefold.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene was relatively modest.

In value terms, sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene ($319M) and plastics ($247M) appeared to be the most exported types of plastic sacks and bags from China worldwide.

Plastics; sacks and bags (including cones), for the conveyance or packing of goods, of plastics other than ethylene polymers, with a CAGR of +2.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review.

China Plastic Bag Exports by Country

The United States (29K tons), Japan (17K tons) and Australia (6.4K tons) were the main destinations of plastic bag exports from China, together accounting for 37% of total exports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, the UK, Canada, Germany, Thailand, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 26%.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +7.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($132M) remains the key foreign market for plastic bag exports from China, comprising 23% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($46M), with an 8.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Australia, with a 5.5% share.

From March 2022 to March 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to the United States was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Japan (+0.1% per month) and Australia (+2.9% per month).
