China Plastic Sanitary Ware Exports
In February 2023, plastic sanitary ware exports from China fell significantly to 6.4M units, with a decrease of -51.7% compared with the month before. In general, exports showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 41% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 14M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to February 2023, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, plastic sanitary ware exports contracted remarkably to $62M (IndexBox estimates) in February 2023. Overall, exports saw a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2022 with an increase of 44% m-o-m. The exports peaked at 143M units in June 2022; however, from July 2022 to February 2023, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country
The United States (858K units), the UK (765K units) and Germany (539K units) were the main destinations of plastic sanitary ware exports from China, together accounting for 34% of total exports. Thailand, the Netherlands, Australia, Russia, France, Mexico, Japan, India, Nigeria and South Korea lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 30%.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +11.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($11M) remains the key foreign market for plastic sanitary ware exports from China, comprising 17% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($5.2M), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 7% share.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly growth rate of value to the United States totaled -5.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average monthly rates of exports growth: Australia (-2.1% per month) and the UK (-2.7% per month).
Exports by Type
Plastic lavatory seats and covers (4.6M units) was the largest type of plastic sanitary ware exported from China, with a 72% share of total exports. Moreover, plastic lavatory seats and covers exceeded the volume of the second product type, plastics bidets, lavatory pans and flushing cisterns (1.6M units), threefold.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the volume of export of plastic lavatory seats and covers stood at -3.6%. With regard to the other exported products, the following average monthly rates of growth were recorded: plastics bidets, lavatory pans and flushing cisterns (-0.2% per month) and plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins (-4.9% per month).
In value terms, plastic baths, shower-baths, sinks and wash-basins ($25M), plastics bidets, lavatory pans and flushing cisterns ($21M) and plastic lavatory seats and covers ($17M) were the most exported types of plastic baths, wash-basins, lavatory pans and covers and similar sanitary ware from China worldwide.
Plastics bidets, lavatory pans and flushing cisterns, with a CAGR of +1.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
In February 2023, the plastic sanitary ware price stood at $9.8 per unit (FOB, China), which is down by -5.7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in September 2022 when the average export price increased by 13% against the previous month. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $11.7 per unit in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to February 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In February 2023, the country with the highest price was Australia ($21.2 per unit), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($4.9 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From February 2022 to February 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Germany (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
