China Rare Gases Imports
In April 2023, rare gases imports into China soared to 2.4M cubic meters, increasing by 25% against the month before. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a moderate expansion from April 2022 to April 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.6% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, imports increased by +45.7% against January 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in November 2022 with an increase of 62% month-to-month. Imports peaked at 2.5M cubic meters in August 2022; however, from September 2022 to April 2023, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, rare gases imports surged to $59M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. In general, total imports indicated a pronounced expansion from April 2022 to April 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +4.1% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, imports increased by +31.9% against January 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in August 2022 with an increase of 57% m-o-m. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at 73M cubic meters in December 2022; however, from January 2023 to April 2023, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
In April 2023, Qatar (2M cubic meters) constituted the largest rare gases supplier to China, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, rare gases imports from Qatar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (319K cubic meters), sixfold.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of volume from Qatar stood at +4.7%.
In value terms, Qatar ($43M) constituted the largest supplier of rare gases to China, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($13M), with a 22% share of total imports.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of value from Qatar totaled +8.3%.
Import Prices by Country
In April 2023, the rare gases price stood at $24.1 per cubic meter (CIF, China), approximately reflecting the previous month. Overall, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average import price increased by 25% m-o-m. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $33,579 per thousand cubic meters. From January 2023 to April 2023, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was the United States ($40.9 per cubic meter), while the price for Qatar stood at $21.0 per cubic meter.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
