Umbrella Exportation in China Declines to $2.8B for 2023

In 2023, overseas shipments of umbrellas increased by 13% to 909M units, rising for the third year in a row after five years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at 973M units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2023, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, umbrella exports contracted to $2.8B (IndexBox estimates) in 2023. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2022 when exports increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $3.1B, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country
Brazil (78M units), the Philippines (74M units) and the United States (73M units) were the main destinations of umbrella exports from China, together comprising 25% of total exports. Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Germany and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
From 2013 to 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Mexico (with a CAGR of +7.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($473M) remains the key foreign market for umbrellas exports from China, comprising 17% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($206M), with a 7.3% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 7% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States stood at +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+5.4% per year) and Japan (-2.4% per year).
Exports by Type
Umbrellas having a telescopic shaft (excluding garden umbrellas) (429M units), umbrellas and sun umbrellas (other than having a telescopic shaft or garden umbrellas) (428M units) and garden or similar umbrellas (51M units) were the main products of umbrella exports from China.
From 2013 to 2023, the biggest increases were recorded for garden or similar umbrellas (with a CAGR of +2.1%), while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, umbrellas having a telescopic shaft (excluding garden umbrellas) ($1B), umbrellas and sun umbrellas (other than having a telescopic shaft or garden umbrellas) ($965M) and garden or similar umbrellas ($818M) appeared to be the most exported types of umbrellas from China worldwide.
Garden or similar umbrellas, with a CAGR of +2.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main product categories over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.
Export Prices by Country
In 2023, the umbrella price stood at $3.1 per unit (FOB, China), dropping by -18.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 24% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $4.2 per unit in 2021; however, from 2022 to 2023, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($6.5 per unit), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($1.6 per unit) was amongst the lowest.
