Umbrella Export in China Declines 8% to $304M in April 2023

China Umbrella Exports

Umbrella exports from China rose sharply to 89M units in April 2023, picking up by 7.5% compared with the month before. Overall, total exports indicated noticeable growth from April 2022 to April 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +3.2% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, exports increased by +167.3% against February 2023 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in March 2023 with an increase of 149% m-o-m. The exports peaked in April 2023.

In value terms, umbrella exports declined to $304M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in March 2023 when exports increased by 112% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $329M, and then dropped in the following month.

Exports by Country

Japan (7.9M units), Brazil (7.4M units) and the United States (6.9M units) were the main destinations of umbrella exports from China, with a combined 25% share of total exports.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in Brazil (with a CAGR of +9.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($50M), Japan ($26M) and South Korea ($26M) were the largest markets for umbrella exported from China worldwide, with a combined 34% share of total exports. the Philippines, India, Brazil, Mexico, Thailand, the UK, Germany, Indonesia, Myanmar and Russia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Brazil, with a CAGR of +10.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports by Type

Umbrellas and sun umbrellas (other than having a telescopic shaft or garden umbrellas) (44M units), umbrellas having a telescopic shaft (excluding garden umbrellas) (39M units) and garden or similar umbrellas (5.3M units) were the main products of umbrella exports from China.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the major product types, was attained by umbrellas having a telescopic shaft (excluding garden umbrellas) (with a CAGR of +4.7%), while the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the most traded types of umbrellas in China were umbrellas and sun umbrellas (other than having a telescopic shaft or garden umbrellas) ($116M), umbrellas having a telescopic shaft (excluding garden umbrellas) ($108M) and garden or similar umbrellas ($81M).

Among the main product categories, umbrellas having a telescopic shaft (excluding garden umbrellas), with a CAGR of +5.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other products experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

In April 2023, the umbrella price stood at $3.4 per unit (FOB, China), waning by -14% against the previous month. In general, the export price saw a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in December 2022 when the average export price increased by 14% month-to-month. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $4.7 per unit in February 2023; however, from March 2023 to April 2023, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($7.2 per unit), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($1.7 per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
