China Wallpaper Exports
In April 2023, overseas shipments of wallpaper and wall coverings increased by 4.5% to 11K tons, rising for the second consecutive month after two months of decline. Overall, total exports indicated a slight expansion from April 2022 to April 2023: its volume increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4% over the last twelve-month period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, exports increased by +149.3% against February 2023 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in March 2023 when exports increased by 139% m-o-m.
In value terms, wallpaper exports shrank modestly to $45M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Over the period under review, total exports indicated notable growth from April 2022 to April 2023: its value increased at an average monthly rate of +2.8% over the last twelve months. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on April 2023 figures, exports increased by +145.8% against February 2023 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in March 2023 when exports increased by 149% against the previous month. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $45M, and then contracted in the following month.

Exports by Country
Uzbekistan (1.6K tons), Vietnam (933 tons) and India (926 tons) were the main destinations of wallpaper exports from China, with a combined 33% share of total exports.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Uzbekistan (with a CAGR of +17.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($7M), Uzbekistan ($4M) and the United States ($3.6M) were the largest markets for wallpaper exported from China worldwide, together accounting for 33% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Uzbekistan, with a CAGR of +16.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Exports by Type
Wallpaper and similar wall coverings; coated or covered on the face side, with a grained, embossed, coloured, design-printed or otherwise decorated layer of plastics (10K tons) was the largest type of wallpaper exported from China, with a 97% share of total exports. It was followed by wallpaper and similar wall coverings and window transparencies; of paper, n.e.s. (293 tons), with a 2.7% share of total exports.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly growth rate of the volume of export of wallpaper and similar wall coverings; coated or covered on the face side, with a grained, embossed, coloured, design-printed or otherwise decorated layer of plastics amounted to +1.4%.
In value terms, wallpaper and similar wall coverings; coated or covered on the face side, with a grained, embossed, coloured, design-printed or otherwise decorated layer of plastics ($43M) remains the largest type of wallpaper exported from China, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by wallpaper and similar wall coverings and window transparencies; of paper, n.e.s. ($1.3M), with a 2.9% share of total exports.
From April 2022 to April 2023, the average monthly rate of growth in terms of the export volume of wallpaper and similar wall coverings; coated or covered on the face side, with a grained, embossed, coloured, design-printed or otherwise decorated layer of plastics amounted to +3.1%.
Export Prices by Country
In April 2023, the wallpaper price stood at $4,161 per ton (FOB, China), falling by -5.3% against the previous month. Over the period from April 2022 to April 2023, it increased at an average monthly rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in February 2023 an increase of 23% month-to-month. The export price peaked at $4,395 per ton in March 2023, and then declined in the following month.
Prices varied noticeably by the country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($10,096 per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($700 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
