Walnut Export in China Drops Slightly to $18M in April 2023

China Walnut Exports

After two months of decline, shipments abroad of walnuts increased by 5.6% to 10K tons in April 2023. Overall, exports saw a tangible increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in September 2022 with an increase of 343% m-o-m.

In value terms, walnut exports contracted slightly to $18M (IndexBox estimates) in April 2023. Over the period under review, exports saw a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in September 2022 with an increase of 326% against the previous month.

Exports by Country

Kyrgyzstan (3K tons), Kazakhstan (1.9K tons) and Algeria (1.3K tons) were the main destinations of walnut exports from China, with a combined 59% share of total exports. Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Iraq, Nepal and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the biggest increases were in Morocco (with a CAGR of +31.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kyrgyzstan ($5.1M), Algeria ($3M) and Morocco ($2.9M) were the largest markets for walnut exported from China worldwide, together comprising 59% of total exports.

Morocco, with a CAGR of +32.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In April 2023, the walnut price amounted to $1,756 per ton (FOB, China), falling by -7.7% against the previous month. Overall, the export price saw a noticeable setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in July 2022 an increase of 10% month-to-month. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $2,446 per ton. From August 2022 to April 2023, the the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In April 2023, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($2,331 per ton), while the average price for exports to Kazakhstan ($1,227 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From April 2022 to April 2023, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Pakistan (+1.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
