China's Central Bank Intervenes in Record Bond Rally

China's central bank has expressed its concern over the recent historic rally in the sovereign bond market, leading to a downturn in cash bonds and futures. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) urged financial institutions engaged in "aggressive trading" within the bond market to be mindful of risks, particularly those associated with the rates market, Bloomberg reported.

As a result of the central bank's cautionary stance, futures contracts on 30-year government bonds experienced a decrease of as much as 1.8%—the most significant drop since September—before moderating to a 1% loss. Concurrently, yields on the 10-year benchmark bond increased by four basis points to 1.77%, following a record low earlier in the week.

This development comes amidst traders' keen interest in Chinese government bonds following leaders' commitment to implement a "moderately loose" monetary policy aimed at economic support. However, the significant decline in Chinese yields has raised fears of the country potentially facing a similar economic stagnation that Japan experienced during its balance sheet recession. Further compounding the issue is the growing China-US yield differential, which is exerting additional pressure on the yuan.
