China's Dividend Surge Puts Pressure on Yuan

China's vigorous push to rejuvenate its faltering stock market has had unintended repercussions on the yuan, with staggering dividend payouts spurring outflows. This has resulted in interim dividends from Hong Kong-listed Chinese firms projected to hit a record $12.9 billion between January and March, as detailed in an external report by Bloomberg. The fourth quarter levels have already set a record, reaching $16.2 billion—up 47% compared to the previous year, exemplifying the dividend boom.

Unintended Consequences on the Yuan

The yuan, facing pressure from a strengthening dollar and looming US-China tensions, is further hamstrung by the dividend spree. Although dividends are primarily paid in Hong Kong dollars, revenues are largely earned in yuan, necessitating currency conversion. As Chinese companies amplify cash payouts following a capital-market reform rolled out in April, this scenario tests Beijing's efforts to sustain short-term market stability while safeguarding its broader economic goals.

According to strategists like Xing Zhaopeng from Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd., the heightened demand for foreign currency can be substantially linked to these dividend flows, as firms convert to other currencies for payments. These initiatives sparked a rally among state-owned enterprises (SOEs), many dual-listed in Hong Kong, who have become particularly responsive to Beijing's call to enhance returns to shareholders.

Beyond Immediate Payouts

The IndexBox platform supports these observations, noting that in 2024 alone, the dividend payments soared to an unprecedented $118 billion. Interim payouts from firms on the Hang Seng China Central SOEs Index are anticipated to reach $9.7 billion in the first quarter. Noteworthy contributions include China Construction Bank Corp., disbursing its first interim payment of $6.5 billion since 2008, and China Mobile Ltd., which marked a 7% increase to $6.9 billion in September.

In contrast to the fourth quarter's impressive figures, the dollar amount trails behind the third quarter, where full-year distributions generally occur. This year, the amount tallied during September reached $74 billion.

Regulations continue to emphasize the significance of enhancing corporate cash distributions to boost shareholder returns, despite the potential for exacerbating yuan pressure. Yet, as Le Xia, BBVA's chief Asia economist points out, depreciation pressures are unlikely to reverse the growing payout trend at SOEs, with mechanisms such as encouraging dollar inflows potentially offsetting the strain on the currency.
