China's Growing Rental Economy Signals Shift in Consumer Behavior

China's domestic demand is witnessing a transformation as more consumers opt to rent items instead of buying, reported by the official People's Daily in a recent commentary. This emerging "rent, not buy" trend is infusing fresh energy into the world's second-largest economy, offering businesses a novel point of view.

The rental model has garnered attention amid a notable downturn in China's domestic demand. Platforms are offering innovative rental options, such as drones for just 1 yuan a day, compared to an outright purchase price of over 5,000 yuan. This shift illustrates the growing appeal of "99% new" items available for temporary possession, like a Louis Vuitton handbag for 35 yuan.

Despite this upbeat narrative, China's retail sales of consumer goods grew a modest 3.5% from January to November year-on-year, marking a reduction from the 7.2% growth boost in 2023's post-pandemic recovery. In response to tepid spending, China has initiated a trade-in scheme this year, allowing consumers to replace old items with subsidies, resulting in over 1 trillion yuan in sales.

Heavy reliance on manufacturing and exports has persisted, while household demand struggles amidst a prolonged real estate slump. Economists are advocating for a pivot towards consumer-centric policies to ignite spending. During a recent ruling Communist Party session, officials stressed the need to "vigorously" enhance consumption in the forthcoming year.

The People's Daily emphasized that while there is visible "consumption upgrading," economic and societal advancements are not fully harmonized. As the country seeks to expand domestic demand "in all directions," subtle shifts in consumer patterns continue to redefine the landscape.
