China's Services Sector Experiences Slower Growth in January Amid Lunar New Year

China's services industry saw a deceleration in growth in January, as the Caixin/S&P Global Services Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) indicated a slip to 51.0 from December's 52.2, reflecting the broader market sentiment captured by the official PMI. This minor dip, reported by Reuters on February 5, 2025, still remains above the 50-mark that separates expansion from contraction.

The decline in the PMI is partially attributed to the early arrival of the Lunar New Year, which impacted employment negatively as several businesses paused operations during the extended holiday period. As China navigates these multilayered economic conditions, policymakers are focusing on strategies to boost internal demand, even as external pressures persist.
