China's Slowing Economy Impacts Natural Gas Demand

Amid a slowing economy, China's once insatiable appetite for natural gas is showing signs of moderation. A recent Bloomberg report highlights this trend, noting a decline in industrial usage and an abundance of alternative energy sources such as coal and renewables. These factors are dampening demand for the cleaner-burning fuel, which has been a crucial component of the country's transition to net zero.

According to data from the IndexBox platform, China's import value for liquefied natural gas reached USD 43.9 billion in 2024, showing a marginal increase from USD 43.8 billion in 2023. Despite the overall increase, the figures mask a decline in demand for LNG, which accounts for nearly 60% of China's overseas supply. This waning demand aligns with China's strategy to enhance domestic production and increase overland gas supplies from Russia.

With policies shifting away from coal-to-gas initiatives, provinces such as Guangdong are focusing on reducing electricity costs to support their industries. Prices for LNG are under pressure as the province aims to make fuel costs more competitive, particularly in the face of a challenging trade environment. As China continues to balance its energy mix, the future of natural gas will likely depend on its ability to compete with abundant domestic resources and cost-effective renewable options.
