Chinese Garlic Production Remains Relatively Flat over the Two Years

IndexBox has just published a new report "China: Garlic - Market Report. Analysis And Forecast To 2025". Here is a summary of the report's key findings.

The Consumption of Garlic in China Remains Stable

As garlic remains a key staple food in the Chinese diet, the volume of consumption remained relatively stable, with only mild fluctuations from 2007 to 2014. However, in 2015, the consumption of garlic in China fell by X% due to decreased harvest as a result of a cold winter. In 2016, Chinese garlic consumption stayed at the same level of 2015, amounting to X. Nevertheless, in value terms, in 2016, the Chinese market showed growth due to a record price jump, which resulted in market growth to $X in 2016 (IndexBox estimates).

Consumption of Garlic Is Expected to Exceed X Tons by 2025

Garlic is one of the most important ingredients in Chinese cuisine, and it is used in cooking of numerous entrées and sauces, or as a seasoning.

Population growth and a general demand for food, along with the implementation of agricultural programs in the framework of China's five-year economic and social development plan will be the main drivers for the growth of the garlic market in China. This growth needs to be considered against the backdrop of increased production, larger cultivation areas and intensified research on new frost-resistant varieties.

Given all the above mentioned factors, market performance is forecast to grow with an anticipated CAGR of +X%, which is then projected to lead the market volume to X tons by 2025.

Chinese Garlic Production Remains Relatively Flat over the Two Years

Chinese garlic production amounted to X tons in 2016. Output of garlic in China indicated a moderate growth from 2007 to 2014, until it dropped by -X% in 2015, and kept at the same level in following year.

The production of garlic is affected by many external factors, ranging from climatic conditions and ecology to the use of pesticides.

In 2016, Chinese garlic harvested areas stood at X ha, experiencing a moderate but steady expansion over the period under review, with only mild fluctuations year-by-year. In addition, under the influence of a high garlic price, enthusiasm for garlic planting expansion increased in Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu and Yunnan main producing areas.

The yield stood at X ton/ha in 2016. A decline of yield was observed in 2015 due to adverse weather conditions in some major producing regions. Weather is one of the major risks and a potential constraint to Chinese garlic production. The changing climatic conditions represent a significant concern for farmers.

Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia Were the Main Export Destinations for Chinese Garlic

China exported X tons of garlic in 2016, which accounted for X% of Chinese garlic production. Moreover, China is the world's main exporter of garlic. In 2016, Chinese garlic exports accounted for an estimated X percent of global garlic exports.

In 2016, the main destinations for China garlic exports were Indonesia (X% based on tons), Vietnam (X%) and Malaysia (X%). It was followed by Brazil (X%), Philippines, the UAE and the U.S. (X% each).

Over the period from 2007 to 2016, the UAE had the highest growth rates of exports, with a CAGR of +X%. It was followed by Brazil (+X per year), Indonesia (+X% per year), Vietnam (+X% per year) and Malaysia (+X% per year). Chinese garlic exported to the U.S. (-X%) showed negative dynamics over the same period.

Chinese Garlic Imports Were Extremely Negligible

Garlic imports into China remained relatively insignificant: China boasts a stable volume of garlic production that is sufficient to satisfy domestic consumption. Chinese garlic imports totaled X tons and amounted to $X in 2016, fluctuating wildly from 2007 to 2016.

In 2016, Indonesia (X% based on tons), Vietnam (X%) and Malaysia (X%) were the main suppliers of garlic into China. They were followed by the U.S. (X%), the UAE (X%), Brunei Darussalam (X%), India (X%), Canada (X%) and Australia (X%).
