Chinese Yuan Loans Surge in January but Fall Short of Last Year's Record

In a notable upswing, Chinese banks issued an estimated 4.5 trillion yuan ($617.75 billion) in new loans in January, a significant increase from December's 990 billion yuan, according to analysts' projections. However, as reported by Ethan Wang and Kevin Yao, this figure remains below the record 4.92 trillion yuan observed a year prior, highlighting ongoing subdued credit demand.

This fluctuation in lending patterns comes amidst broader economic challenges in China. Data from the IndexBox platform indicates that China's new bank lending totaled 18.09 trillion yuan in 2024, marking a decrease from the 22.75 trillion yuan recorded in 2023, the lowest since 2019. The decrease reflects the economy's struggle with a prolonged property crisis, deflationary pressures, and cautious spending from both households and businesses.

Further compounding China's economic hurdles is the situation with local government debt, which has curtailed credit appetite. As manufacturing activity contracted unexpectedly in January—its weakest point since August—unease about the global economic environment persists. Moreover, trade tensions have intensified, notably with the U.S. imposing an additional 10% tariff on Chinese imports, prompting retaliatory measures from China.

Looking forward, China's policymakers face the challenging task of maintaining a growth target around 5% in 2025, amidst these compounding pressures. Local governments are poised for heightened bond issuance to bolster total social financing—a key measure of credit and liquidity. Meanwhile, expectations rise for more rate cuts to support the yuan amid depreciation pressures.
