Belgium Emerges as Fastest-Growing Supplier of Filled Chocolate Bars to UK

In 2020, the UK's imports of chocolate bars with filling jumped by +16% y-o-y to 102K tons or by +8.9% y-o-y to $390M in value terms. Imports robustly followed an upward trend, doubling over the past decade. While Poland, Germany and the Netherlands remain the largest filled chocolate bar exporters to the UK, Belgium emerged as the fastest-growing supplier. In 2020, UK's average filled chocolate bar import price dropped by -6.5% y-o-y to $3,830 per ton.

Chocolate bar with filling imports into the UK skyrocketed to 102K tons in 2020, growing by +16% against the previous year's figure. In value terms, chocolate bar with filling imports rose by +8.9% y-o-y $390M (IndexBox estimates) in 2020. From 2010 to 2020, total imports increased from 52K tons to 102K tons.

Poland (30K tons), Germany (25K tons) and the Netherlands (19K tons) were the leading suppliers of chocolate bars with filling imports to the UK, together accounting for 72% of total imports. Belgium, Ireland, France and Austria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.

In value terms, Germany ($112M), Poland ($83M) and the Netherlands ($73M) were the most extensive chocolate bar with filling suppliers to the UK, with a combined 69% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Belgium, Ireland, France and Austria, which together accounted for a further 21%.

Belgium saw the highest spike in exports of filled chocolate bars to the UK. The supplies from Belgium grew from $9M in 2019 to $41M in 2020. The UK's imports from Germany reduced from $115M to $112M over this period. Imports from Poland, the Netherlands, France and Austria recorded an increase in 2020.

In 2020, the average import price for filled chocolate bars amounted to $3,830 per ton, declining by -6.5% against the previous year. Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Austria ($4,922 per ton), while the price for Poland ($2,816 per ton) was amongst the lowest. In 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria, while the prices for the other significant suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
