Cobalt Prices Plummet to Seven-Year Low Amidst Record Production Levels

In a striking turn of events, cobalt prices have sunk to their lowest point since 2016, shadowed by a surge in global production rates. According to a recent report, CMOC Group Ltd., one of the world's largest cobalt producers, announced it plans to maintain high-level output through 2025, with projected figures ranging between 100,000 and 120,000 tons by 2025. Following a remarkable yield of 114,165 tons in 2024, the group's foresight into 2025 reflects their persistent commitment to meeting global demands. This excess in supply has had a notable impact on market values, with spot cobalt trading at a mere $11.02 per pound as of January 23.

The IndexBox platform provides insightful data into the Chinese cobalt market, revealing a noteworthy rise in export values from $182.4 million in 2023 to $251.3 million in 2024. China stands as a major player in the cobalt scene, exporting primarily to the Netherlands, Russia, Japan, the United States, and South Korea, to the tune of $79.6 million, $19.8 million, $17.5 million, $14.4 million, and $13.7 million respectively in 2023. Despite the drop in prices, China's import value also saw a rise, from $2.6 billion in 2023 to $3.1 billion in 2024, predominantly imported from Canada, Russia, Japan, Australia, and Madagascar, with Canada topping the list at $63.6 million.

As cobalt is commonly extracted as a by-product of copper mining, CMOC remains optimistic about future copper production, setting a target between 600,000 and 660,000 tons for the current year. This target closely follows last year's output of roughly 650,000 tons, highlighting the synergy between copper and cobalt production strategies.
