Codelco's Pioneering Move to Recycle Grinding Balls

Chilean state-owned mining giant Codelco is taking a significant step towards environmental sustainability by opting to use grinding balls created from recycled materials at its prestigious El Teniente mine. For detailed insights, read more on the announcement here.

Codelco's decision is in line with its broader goal to decrease its greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030. As part of this initiative, the company has entered a five-year contract with Magotteaux Andino, a subsidiary of Chile's Sigdo Koppers, to ensure a consistent supply of eco-friendly grinding balls. Mauricio Acuna, Codelco's vice president of supply, noted that this contract represents the first instance of incorporating a 100% supply model from recovered materials. This initiative will extend to Codelco's Andina division beginning in 2025.

The manufacturing process associated with these recycled grinding balls is expected to produce a carbon footprint 53% lower than the materials traditionally used. This significant reduction will result in saving approximately 40,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, which is comparable to the emissions of nearly 8,500 vehicles.

Chilean Iron Grinding Balls Market Overview

A snapshot of the iron grinding balls market in Chile reveals a mixed scenario. Based on data from the IndexBox platform, in 2023, Chile exported iron grinding balls valued at $3.3 million, with Brazil being the largest importer at $3.1 million, followed by Peru and Bolivia. In contrast, Chile's imports for the same category amounted to $14.1 million in 2023, with India ($6.6 million), Thailand ($2.7 million), and the United States ($2.5 million) being the major suppliers.

By 2024, the value of exports improved slightly to $3.7 million, while imports decreased to $10.5 million, indicating a growing inclination towards local recycling and manufacturing efforts, as showcased by Codelco's latest move.
