Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez Discusses the Future of AI and Industry Impacts

Aidan Gomez, the CEO of Cohere, expressed a compelling view about the future of artificial intelligence amidst revolutionary industry developments. In a recent interview, he detailed his insights following the release of DeepSeek's AI model, which has dramatically affected the US stock market. Gomez's observations were covered by Business Insider in February 2025.

Gomez, who played a instrumental role in the AI community as one of the co-authors of the 2017 "Attention is All You Need" paper, emphasized that producing high-quality AI does not necessitate exorbitant expenses. He noted that the substantial financial burden often deemed necessary to produce robust technology is a misconception proven by DeepSeek's model.

Despite the impressive capabilities of DeepSeek's R1 model, which caused a substantial shift in the market, Gomez remains skeptical of its practical application in businesses. He highlighted that enterprises probably prefer customized AI solutions over off-the-shelf models due to concerns about privacy and the sensitive nature of their data.

Cohere, valued at $5.5 billion, is concentrating its efforts on providing agentic AI, emphasizing tailor-made solutions to meet specific enterprise needs. According to data from the IndexBox platform, there is a growing demand for such customized AI, reflecting Gomez's assertion that businesses are keen to adapt AI models with proprietary data to unlock new tiers of value.

The interview also shed light on broader concerns related to data security, especially with worries about DeepSeek's alleged associations with servers based in China. With US legislators contemplating bans on such software, Gomez insists that data privacy must be paramount for these technologies to gain widespread enterprise adoption.

Looking forward, Gomez sees the development of agentic AI as a promising trend, with autonomous software becoming a major focus for business leaders worldwide. This approach aligns with the strategic direction of Cohere, as they recently launched an early-access program for their own agentic AI platform, North.

While Gomez acknowledges DeepSeek as a disruptive force in AI, he maintains that enterprises need more than an innovative model to harness AI's full potential, underscoring that simply downloading a model is insufficient for impactful integration into business operations.
