Colombian Valentine's Day Roses Escape Tariff Troubles

The highlands of Colombia provide an ideal environment for cultivating some of the world's finest flowers, making it a global hub for rose production. According to Bloomberg, the region north of Bogotá becomes a flurry of activity as workers process nearly 18,000 rose stems daily, destined for Valentine's Day bouquets across the U.S.

Colombia's rose export market is a significant contributor to the national economy, with exports reaching $375.7 million in 2023, and slightly dropping to $362.4 million in 2024 based on data from the IndexBox platform. This sector sees the U.S. as its largest importer, accounting for $294.6 million of Colombia's flower exports in 2023, followed by Spain, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands.

Recently, the flourishing trade nearly hit a snag when a brief tariff spat threatened to levy 25% tariffs on imports between the U.S. and Colombia. Carmen Bravo, owner of the Belen de los Tejares flower farm, voiced her relief when the situation resolved, as she saw potential catastrophic implications in the threatened tariffs — particularly considering that 80% of Colombia's flower exports head to the U.S., representing $1.7 billion of total national exports.

"This would have been disastrous," expressed Bravo. "We invest so much in preparing for the Valentine's season. A 25% or 50% tariff would have inflicted severe damage, especially for smaller operations like mine, where Valentine's sales can account for up to half of our annual revenue."

The industry remains a vital part of the Colombian economy, employing many and boosting trade. While imports of cut flowers were modest, with Ecuador contributing $54.5K in 2023, the export scene solidifies Colombia's position as a key player in the global floriculture market.
