Costco Poised for Another Profitable Quarter Amid Economic Challenges

Costco (COST) is gearing up to release its fiscal first-quarter results, and expectations are running high as inflation-burdened shoppers increasingly opt for the wholesale retailer. Yahoo Finance reports that Costco's adjusted earnings per share are projected to reach $3.81, according to Bloomberg consensus estimates, while revenue is forecasted at $62.14 billion.

The wholesale giant is on track to report a 6.26% increase in same-store sales excluding fuel, thanks significantly to its international operations, followed by the U.S. and Canada. Foot traffic for the quarter is anticipated to rise by 6.87% compared to the previous year, even as Wall Street anticipates a 0.40% decline in transaction growth.

Notably, Costco's stock has experienced a year-to-date surge of over 50%, far exceeding the S&P 500's (^GSPC) 27% gain, indicating robust market confidence in the retailer's growth trajectory.

Looking back to the previous year's fiscal first-quarter results, Costco is expected to showcase impressive growth with a significant increase in key performance indicators. Revenue is projected to rise from $57.8 billion to $62.14 billion, and adjusted earnings per share are set to increase from $3.58 to $3.81. The company's total comparable sales, excluding fuel, are anticipated to grow from 3.9% to 6.26%, while its e-commerce sector is expected to witness growth from 6.3% to 14.1%.

The recent hike in membership fees, the first since 2017, is expected to significantly impact the quarter's results. Starting September 1, the Gold Star membership increased by $5 to $65, while the Executive membership rose by $10 to $130. These changes are projected to affect approximately 52 million memberships, with membership fee income forecasted to grow to $1.17 billion from last year's $1.08 billion.

Costco's commitment to value and membership retention has been further bolstered by its efforts to reinforce membership card scanning at the entrance, providing real-time insights into foot traffic and membership renewals. "Membership growth remains healthy as consumers seek value and existing members continue to trade up to the Executive membership level," stated Joseph Feldman of Telsey Advisory Group.

With 891 warehouses globally last quarter, Costco is expected to expand this number to 895, reflecting its ongoing growth strategy. E-commerce is also expected to perform exceptionally well, with sales rising by 14.1%, buoyed by strong performance in diverse categories, from appliances to gold bars.

Rupesh Parikh, an analyst at Oppenheimer, has highlighted Costco as a "Top Pick," expressing optimism about market share gains and the retailer's ability to maintain top-line momentum. He suggests the potential for a future stock split, with Costco shares currently trading around $1,000.
