Costco to Raise Hourly Pay for U.S. Workers Amid Union Strike Authorization

In a significant move for retail workers across the United States, Costco Wholesale has announced plans to increase the hourly wage for most of its U.S. store employees to over $30. This update comes in the wake of a report from Reuters detailing the company's commitment to enhancing worker compensation over the next three years.

According to the memo sent to employees, Costco plans to incrementally raise pay for its top-tier hourly workers by $1 in the first year to $30.20, followed by additional $1 increases in each of the following two years. This decision aligns with recent developments where Costco Teamsters union members had authorized a nationwide strike as contract negotiations intensified ahead of a January 31 deadline. The union, representing over 18,000 Costco employees, had seen 85% of its members vote in favor of strike action.

Entry-level employees are also set to benefit with a 50-cent rise, pushing their hourly wage to $20. Costco CEO Ron Vachris highlighted that these adjustments aim to ensure that Costco's hourly wages and benefits lead the retail industry standards.
