CPP Investments Weighs Strategic Moves for Encino Acquisition Partners

The Canadian pension fund CPP Investments is exploring strategic alternatives, including a potential sale or initial public offering (IPO) for its U.S. oil and natural gas subsidiary, Encino Acquisition Partners, which could be valued at up to $7 billion including debt, according to a recent report on Yahoo Finance.

This development occurs against a backdrop of favorable conditions for the energy sector in the United States, as policy changes aim to further fossil-fuel production by streamlining permits for energy projects and mitigating environmental constraints. Contributing to these developments is the rising need for power driven by the demand for artificial intelligence and data centers, enhancing the prospects for natural gas, according to insights from the IndexBox platform.

Encino Acquisition Partners, based in Houston and primarily owned by CPP, is at the preliminary stage of this strategic review and is in the process of appointing investment banks for guidance. Notably, Encino is one of the largest privately-held exploration and production companies in the U.S., focusing on operations within the Utica shale basin in Ohio.

Established in 2017, the partnership was forged to acquire and develop U.S. oil and gas assets, with CPP Investments contributing $1 billion initially. Since then, Encino has made significant acquisitions, such as Chesapeake Energy's Ohio assets for $2 billion, and further investments continue, including a recent $300 million from CPP in early 2024 to expedite asset development.

The decision to weigh strategic options has been expedited by the successful January IPO of Infinity Natural Resources, which saw a $265 million raise and a favorable market response, highlighting the ongoing investor interest in natural gas ventures.
