CVS Health Introduces Smartphone Feature to Unlock Store Cabinet Items

CVS Health Tests New Smartphone Feature to Unlock Locked Cabinet Items in Stores

CVS Health is piloting an innovative app feature allowing customers to unlock items stored behind display cabinets directly from their smartphones. As reported by Yahoo Finance, this functionality aims to enhance convenience for shoppers accessing products, such as deodorant and toothpaste, often secured to deter theft.

The feature is currently being tested in three CVS stores and requires customers to log into the CVS app, connect to the store's Wi-Fi, and enable Bluetooth. CVS Health's Executive Vice President, Tilak Mandadi, revealed plans to expand the pilot to 10 to 15 additional stores, with long-term aspirations of implementing the technology across its 9,000 U.S. locations.

This advancement is a component of CVS's broader mobile platform revamp, designed to address common retail pharmacy challenges like lengthy wait times and obscure prescription costs. The app already provides capabilities for tracking prescription statuses, viewing prices, and expediting pickups with personalized barcodes, as well as an AI chatbot for scheduling immunizations and managing prescriptions.

CVS's initiative reflects a growing trend among retailers like Walmart and Target, who have also resorted to locking valuable items to mitigate theft. While Walmart is testing similar smartphone technology for product access, some retailers, such as Walgreens, have noted that this approach can deter customers, thus decreasing sales. By integrating digital solutions, CVS aims to counteract declining in-store foot traffic due to the pandemic and rising e-commerce, hoping to reclaim customer visits.

With 60 million digital users currently engaged with the CVS Health app, success in these technological advances could see it evolve into a "super app," as suggested by Mandadi.
