This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price).
Consumption By Country
The UK (64K tons) remains the largest dairy spread consuming country in the European Union, accounting for 32% of total volume. Moreover, dairy spread consumption in the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, the Czech Republic (22K tons), threefold. France (22K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 11% share.
From 2007 to 2018, the average annual growth rate of volume in the UK stood at -3.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Czech Republic (+8.5% per year) and France (+4.0% per year).
In value terms, the largest dairy spread markets in the European Union were the UK ($112M), France ($105M) and the Czech Republic ($87M), together accounting for 47% of the total market. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Sweden, Greece, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and Romania, which together accounted for a further 40%.
Market Forecast 2019-2030
Driven by stable demand for dairy spread in the European Union, the market is expected to start an upward consumption trend over the next decade. The performance of the market is forecast to increase slightly, with an anticipated CAGR of +0.3% for the period from 2018 to 2030, which is projected to bring the market volume to 206K tons by the end of 2030.
Production in the EU
In 2018, the dairy spread production in the European Union amounted to 205K tons, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, dairy spread production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.
Production By Country
The country with the largest volume of dairy spread production was the UK (62K tons), accounting for 30% of total volume. Moreover, dairy spread production in the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, France (22K tons), threefold. The Czech Republic (20K tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 10% share.
In the UK, dairy spread production declined by an average annual rate of -3.9% over the period from 2007-2018. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: France (+5.8% per year) and the Czech Republic (+9.2% per year).
Exports in the EU
In 2018, the dairy spread exports in the European Union totaled 34K tons, going up by 7.8% against the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2007 to 2018; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The volume of exports peaked in 2018 and are expected to retain its growth in the immediate term. In value terms, dairy spread exports totaled $152M (IndexBox estimates) in 2018.
Exports by Country
In 2018, Belgium (9.5K tons), distantly followed by Poland (5,048 tons), Germany (3,811 tons), the UK (3,409 tons), France (2,581 tons), Croatia (2,344 tons) and Ireland (2,219 tons) were the main exporters of dairy spreads, together mixing up 85% of total exports.
From 2007 to 2018, the most notable rate of growth in terms of exports, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Poland, while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($53M) remains the largest dairy spread supplier in the European Union, comprising 35% of total dairy spread exports. The second position in the ranking was occupied by Germany ($21M), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by France, with a 8.7% share.
Export Prices by Country
In 2018, the dairy spread export price in the European Union amounted to $4,449 per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. Over the period under review, the dairy spread export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export price peaked at $4,859 per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2018, export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($5,639 per ton), while the UK ($2,130 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in the EU
In 2018, the amount of dairy spreads imported in the European Union totaled 28K tons, remaining stable against the previous year. In value terms, dairy spread imports totaled $114M (IndexBox estimates) in 2018.
Imports by Country
The UK (5,704 tons) and Germany (5,474 tons) were the key importers of dairy spreads in 2018, resulting at approx. 20% and 19% of total imports, respectively. Portugal (2,558 tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9% share, followed by Slovakia (8.4%), France (8%), the Czech Republic (6.1%) and the Netherlands (5.5%). Belgium (1,250 tons), Greece (1,104 tons), Romania (808 tons), Austria (652 tons) and Finland (483 tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, the UK ($23M), Germany ($18M) and France ($13M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2018, together comprising 47% of total imports. These countries were followed by Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovakia, Greece, the Czech Republic, Romania and Finland, which together accounted for a further 44%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2018, the dairy spread import price in the European Union amounted to $4,039 per ton, surging by 2% against the previous year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2018, the country with the highest price was Austria ($9,149 per ton), while Slovakia ($2,169 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
