Software giant Databricks is approaching a deal that may rank as one of the largest venture capital funding rounds ever recorded. According to Reuters, this San Francisco-based data analytics company could raise over $9.5 billion in a funding round that is nearly twice oversubscribed. The company is poised to achieve a valuation exceeding $60 billion with shares priced at $92.50 each, a figure considered attractive by investors in light of Databricks' projected $3.8 billion revenue for the upcoming fiscal year.

Key investors such as Thrive Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Insight Partners, and Singaporean wealth fund GIC are leading the charge in this colossal investment opportunity. Concurrently, Databricks is negotiating to secure $4.5 billion in debt financing, a strategic move aligning with Bloomberg's reports on their private debt initiatives.

Despite not yet turning a profit, Databricks has seen a remarkable leap in value from its $43 billion valuation last September. This funding round aims not only to boost the company's market posture but also to resolve administrative matters such as the buyback of expiring restricted stock units from early employees and associated tax liabilities. The strategy reportedly mirrors steps taken by Stripe, which raised $6.5 billion last year.

Databricks' rapid ascent is attributed to the booming AI sector, reinforcing its market influence with tools that enable enterprises to leverage existing data in developing AI applications. This positions them in rivalry with firms like Snowflake, which currently holds a market cap near $56 billion with projected revenue of $3.4 billion for the fiscal year concluding in January 2025. Through sustaining private status amid blockbuster fundraising efforts, Databricks illustrates the substantial venture capital reserves driving major deals and the persistent investor enthusiasm for AI advancements.

As part of this lucrative deal, preferred shares will be issued to participating investors.
