Deep Yellow Defers Tumas Project Investment, Eyeing Uranium Price Changes

Australian uranium developer Deep Yellow has postponed its final investment decision for its Tumas project in Namibia, with the decision now expected by March 2025. This delay is influenced by hurdles in obtaining final costs and quotes for engineering work, according to a report by Mining.com.

As part of their strategy, Deep Yellow is keen on optimizing project timing based on uranium market dynamics. The company expressed skepticism regarding current uranium price forecasts, suggesting these are "overstated." The rapidly increasing demand for nuclear energy could necessitate a higher uranium price to justify new developments.

Deep Yellow continues to advance its Tumas project, considered one of the most prominent greenfield uranium projects globally, with substantial outlined resources. Initially assessed to have 67 million pounds in reserves, additional drilling has elevated this estimate to 79 million pounds of uranium oxide at 298 ppm grade. The Tumas mine, projected to operate for 22.5 years, is positioned to produce 3.6 million pounds annually, with initial capital costs estimated at USD 372 million.

Concurrently, uranium ores and concentrates in Namibia have seen significant export values. IndexBox data reveals that Namibia's uranium export value substantially increased from USD 787.2 million in 2023 to an anticipated USD 2.4 billion in 2024. Key export destinations in 2024 include China (USD 1.9 billion) and France (USD 307.8 million), showing a strong upward trend compared to 2023 figures of USD 610.5 million and USD 100.3 million to China and France respectively.

With an end-of-year cash reserve of AUD 238 million and debt-free status, Deep Yellow remains poised to further its engineering assessments and secure necessary utilities from Namibian providers. This ongoing effort underlines the company's commitment to meeting the pre-conditions necessary for commencing processing plant construction, contingent on favorable uranium price adjustments.
