Deutsche Bank Faces Larger-Than-Expected Profit Decline in 2024

FRANKFURT - Deutsche Bank has announced a significant drop in both its fourth-quarter and full-year 2024 profits, primarily due to legal provisions and restructuring costs that have heavily impacted its global investment banking division's revenues. According to a report from Reuters, these unforeseen expenses prompted the German banking giant to abandon a key cost target, signalling a challenging year ahead (source).

The bank attributed a net profit of 106 million euros ($110.43 million) to shareholders for the fourth quarter, which starkly contrasts with the 1.26 billion euros reported in the same period last year. This outcome fell short of analysts' expectations, who had predicted a profit of approximately 380 million euros. Furthermore, Deutsche Bank recorded an annual profit of 2.70 billion euros for 2024, down from 4.21 billion euros in 2023, further missing the projected figure of nearly 3 billion euros.

Christian Sewing, Deutsche Bank's CEO, is facing mounting pressure as he strives to meet ambitious profitability and cost-efficient targets aimed at solidifying the bank's standing. Despite challenges, Sewing is determined to drive the lender towards a cost-to-income ratio below 65%, revising the previous target of less than 62.5% for 2025.

The costs associated with restructuring and legal provisions have raised concerns among analysts regarding the feasibility of Deutsche Bank fulfilling its strategic objectives.
