DEWA to Implement Cubic Metre Water Measurement by 2025

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced a strategic shift towards the use of the cubic metre as the standard unit for measuring water consumption, effective from March 2025. This decision is in alignment with Cabinet Resolution No. (85) of 2023 and Ministerial Resolution No. (43) of 2024, issued by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology. The resolutions mandate the cessation of the imperial gallon usage in water meters across the UAE.

According to the IndexBox platform, the global push for standardization and sustainability is influencing many nations, including the UAE, to adopt universally recognized units like the cubic metre. This change is anticipated to enhance DEWA's ability to benchmark against international standards, part of a broader effort to maintain its leadership in innovation and sustainability.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, stated, "Adopting the cubic metre as a globally recognized and uniform measurement unit, rather than the imperial gallon, is a significant step toward enhancing alignment with international best practices. This transition will facilitate benchmarking across sectors, support our efforts to provide world-class services, and enhance DEWAs leadership in innovation and sustainability--ultimately benefiting customers and stakeholders."

In preparation for the transition, DEWA will display both cubic metres and gallons on water bills and customer dashboards. Importantly, customer meters will remain unchanged as they are already compatible with the cubic metre measurement system. Official communication channels will be used to inform customers about the upcoming changes in billing practices.
