Discovery+ Raises Subscription Prices Amid Streaming Market Shifts

In a significant move as the streaming market evolves, Warner Bros Discovery's platform, Discovery+, has announced a price increase for its monthly subscriptions. The decision marks the first price hike by a streaming service in the new year, as reported by Reuters.

The ad-supported plan will now cost subscribers $5.99 per month, up from $4.99, while the ad-free plan will increase to $9.99 from $8.99. New subscribers will be subject to the new rates immediately, and existing subscribers will experience the change in their next billing cycle, or from February 7th.

This adjustment comes as several platforms, including Warner Bros Discoverys flagship service Max, Paramount+, and Peacock, have incrementally raised subscription fees in pursuit of profitability amid a maturing market and plateauing subscriber growth.

Discovery+ showcases a variety of content from renowned networks like Food Network, Animal Planet, and Magnolia Network. Adventure reality shows such as "Deadliest Catch" and "Dual Survival" are a part of its diverse offerings, with much of its programming also accessible on Max. Despite its broad content base, the subscriber count for Discovery+ remains undisclosed, though it reportedly trails behind Max.

In related corporate restructuring endeavors, Warner Bros Discovery announced in December plans to potentially divest or spin off its declining cable TV businesses, like CNN, from its more robust streaming and studio operations. This strategic direction aligns with broader industry trends, as traditional cable TV continues to lose subscribers to digital streaming services, according to IndexBox data.
